How to choose a Type-C cable: watts, length and data speed

icconX USB-A to Type-C charging cable

Two cables can look the same and still charge very differently. Here are the four things worth checking before you buy.

EndsUSB-A, Type-C or Lightning
WattsAt least your charger's rating
Length1 m everyday, 1.5 m for far sockets

1. Which ends do I need?

Older chargers

USB-A to Type-C

For chargers with the rectangular USB-A port.

Modern chargers

Type-C to Type-C

Android phones, iPhone 15 and later, tablets and many laptops.

Older iPhones

Type-C to Lightning

iPhones before the iPhone 15, with a USB-C charger.

Laptops

Type-C, 100W

For laptop chargers and fast tablets.

2. What does the watt rating mean?

It is the most power the cable is built to carry. A cable rated lower than your charger can slow down fast charging. Match or beat the charger: a 60W cable for chargers up to 60W, a 100W cable for laptop chargers.

3. Which length should I choose?

1 m is the everyday length for a desk, a bedside or a car. 1.5 m is handy when the socket is far from where you sit.

4. Does the cable move data?

Most charging cables, including ours, transfer data at USB 2.0 speed, up to 480 Mbps: enough for photos, music and phone backups. Large camera video files need a USB 3 cable.

How do I make a cable last?

  • Pull the plug, not the wireThe joint near the plug wears first.
  • Loop it looselyNo sharp bends at the plug when you store it.
  • Retire a damaged cableDo not use a cable with exposed wire.

Questions

Can I use a 100W cable with a 20W charger?

Yes. The cable rating is a maximum; it works with any lower-watt charger.

Why does my phone charge slowly with an old cable?

Older or damaged cables are often rated lower. Try a cable rated for your charger's wattage.

Best for you
