Mukesh is a 35-year-old tourist guide in the pink city, Jaipur! Mukesh is a friendly, talkative, and well-informed tour guide who is well connected to a network of 3-star hotels from where he gets his customers.
A man with the gift of the gab, Mukesh talks nineteen to a dozen, is very inquisitive about his tourists’ personal lives, and does all that he can to make the trip as memorable for them. Mukesh grew up in a rural agrarian family in the village of Barli before coming to Jaipur as a 17-year-old teenager looking for work. It has been 18 years since Mukesh has been in the city, of which he has spent 15 years as a tourist guide. Over time he has mastered not just English but also speaks decent French, German and Spanish which makes him the go-to tour guide.
Charming and well turned out while still rooted in his culture, Mukesh sports a crisp safari suit, a pair of mojdis, a colorful traditional tie and dye Rajasthani pagdi and ear studs. You can seem him proudly twirling his thick moustache at all times. Mukesh often gets stopped by random tourists to take photos with him to which he obliges happily.
A popular figure amongst the hospitality and tourist guide community, Mukesh constantly gets calls from hotels to book him, if he is already booked, he coordinates with his other tour guides who he trusts and gets them the job. He is always volunteering to take photos of his tourists from his tried and tested angles on his mobile phone camera which he then forwards to them on Whatsapp.
A Bollywood buff and a lover of old classical Hindi songs, Mukesh can be seen playing them aloud on his phone wherever he goes. Knowing his love for Bollywood, the local Line producers and casting agents in Jaipur always reach out to him to work as an extra in any film being shot in and around Jaipur. Mukesh’s phone is full of photos of him posing with top Bollywood stars he’s had the pleasure to work with as an extra and is always keen to show his photos and talk about his experience with anyone and everyone he meets.
Mukesh lives with his wife and two daughters in a small 1 RK home in the old city area near Nehru Bazaar.
Till date Mukesh hasn’t stepped out of his home state Rajasthan but hopes that he can one day visit Mumbai to see where all the famous film stars live and tour the city about, he has heard so much of in films and from people.
